Only recently, after twenty-five years of democracy and the "rule of the people", have Croatian novels started to resemble the sf classics and modern works in the genre, mainly from USA, Great Britain, Ireland. In the early days of sf in Croatia, writers dealt with adventurous and utopian themes, but later their focus shifted more to existential and social issues, especially after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Croatian Patriotic war in the nineties typically they now wrote about the life of the "little man" who is repressed by global trends of capitalism and injustice as a result of abrupt democratization on a state level. Croatian sf in its infancy (especially after the nineties) is not very different from the East European fiction and we can compare it to the Russian school of fiction.

I needed to forget what a terrible week I’d had, and I wasn’t sure just one of my favorite things was going to be enough. I was certainly going to find someone to go home with. Maybe I could get her laid as a welcome gift? Sex always put me in a good mood. I adored her and didn’t get to see her as often as I’d like as she lived in England, so I was all about the positive. It was Darcy’s first night in New York City, and I wasn’t going to worry about how I was going to pay for anything tonight when I had no job to go to tomorrow. We were at some fancy bar in SoHo where the drinks were twice the price of a car. “Cheers.” I raised my drink and clinked it against the glasses of two of my most treasured people in the world-my sister, Scarlett, and her sister-in-law Darcy. Men and cocktails were two of my favorite things to waste time on, and I made sure my day always had plenty of either one or the other. New York Times bestselling and Alex, Nebula, and Hugo-Award-winning author Seanan McGuire introduces readers to a world of amoral alchemy, shadowy organizations, and impossible cities in this standalone fantasy. Instead, there’s a delicious slow burn of nerves and an ending that cleverly lets you interpret what you’ve just seen. That initial tension ramps up throughout the drama, thanks in part to director Joe Llorens and his fine cast, Charis Walter and Manuel Solis-Bauza, who all have the sense not to let things get too over-the-top too fast. Playwright Bethany Dickens Assaf has set up a lot of tension from the start: The astronauts are alone in individual pods, they are from separate hostile nations on Earth, and (wait for it) they might not be alone. “Lots of bad things can happen in space.” So says one of the two astronauts orbiting on the dark side of an unknown planet in “The Vast of Darkness” (Green venue, 60 minutes). There are a lot of “formerlies” in Edgar’s life at the beginning of the novel – former job, former marriage, former body, the latter down one right arm following a gruesome workplace accident. The basics: Duma Key is about – and told from the perspective of – 50-something Edgar Freemantle, construction company president, formerly of Minnesota, now of Duma Key, Florida. I think Duma Key nicely satisfies the “Cover art that draws you in” test Julie laid down for the challenge – I particularly like the partially submerged, holographic lettering of King’s name. I’m not even 10 books through the 24-strong list of challenge themes, and that’s in part because I keep picking gigantic tomes like this one, another 700-page Stephen King bruiser that takes you from Minnesota to Florida and back again, with stops at Insanity Isle and It’s Raining Frogs Junction in between. So for those curious as to how I’m doing on my friend Julie’s reading challenge – terribly! I am doing terribly. ‘Twas too weighty a title, however, so Duma Key it was. Or Pet Sematary II: The Golden Years: But not Maine this time Florida. The supporting cast is quite differently portrayed and the attitudes of the characters are slightly different in the novel. It’s time everyone met Dexter, a blood-spatter specialist who works for the Miami Police Department. If you answered “no” to any of those questions, you have problems. Have you met Dexter Morgan? Surely you have watched the Showtime series based on his character, or even better, read the absurdly entertaining novels by Jeff Lindsay? She explains the visual language of bisexuality, about bi visibility on screen and the colourful world of bisexual communities. She also questions societal reactions to bisexuality (are bi people more promiscuous? No). She asks why so few bisexual people are out, and examines the mental and physical health consequences of this. She examines the latest research on bisexual kids, parents and grandparents, and explores bisexual identities across the lifespan. She introduces some famous bi activists and scholars whom everyone should know. She looks at behavioural bisexuality in animals, and investigates whether there is a bi gene. In Bi Julia Shaw explores how people have defined and measured bisexuality during its long and important history. This book sets out to answer some of the questions that many people have about bisexuality. Bisexuality is the largest sexual minority in the world and the least well understood. |
